In Search Of Gehl In Asia
Asia
What can we learn about city-making on the streets of Asia?
This article positions streets as the nucleus of city-making, and challenges Western-centric urban design paradigms by exploring vibrant Asian cities. Focusing on the type of walkable urbanism promoted by Gehl and other members of the Copenhagen School, the study examines how Asian streets align with Gehl's criteria for successful city making, and what lessons they offer for cultivating a unique Sydney street vernacular.
This research emphasises sustainability and vibrant urban life as an antidote to the multitude of crises facing our modern day cities. It aims to enrich urban discourse by exploring global precedents of the urban condition, beyond traditional Eurocentric perspectives.
